Jack London State Historic Park will host a hike from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, to honor the trees.
Inspired by the Jewish holiday occurring in January, “Tu Bishvat,” which actually translates to mean “New Year of the Trees,” and speaks to the renewal of nature, the hike is a non-religious event to honor and appreciate the trees in their native environment.
Naturalist John Lynch will lead a slow ecological ramble through the park concluding with a ceremonial planting of a seedling from the heritage oak tree known as “Jack’s Oak” that’s estimated to be more than 200 years old.
The spot will be marked with a sign and then the seedling will be taken to Quarryhill Botanical Garden where it will be tended.
Breck Parkman, senior state archeologist for California State Parks, will join Rabbi Bella Bogart and the Rev. Nancy Taylor to mark the ceremonial tree planting and its significance.

Donations of $10 are requested but not required. The $10 parking fee is collected at the entrance kiosk.
