A Sausalito man died in a two-vehicle accident just after noon on Sunday, Jan. 26, on Eighth Street East near Vineburg Deli in Sonoma.

Abdulhadi Awad, 36, was traveling southbound on Eighth Street in a gray BMW when he ran a red light at the intersection of Eighth Street East and Napa Road, killing the 35-year-old driver of a silver Subaru and seriously injuring his passenger Natalie Weiss, 34, both of Sausalito, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.

A CHP helicopter landed in the Vineburg Deli parking lot and transported Weiss to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, where she is being treated for major injuries.

Awad, a resident of Vallejo, was seated upright and speaking to officers prior to being transported by ambulance to Queen of the Valley. He was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the CHP release.

Two motorcyclists waiting at the intersection were witnesses to the accident and appeared shaken at the scene on Sunday afternoon but were not injured.

Napa Road and Eighth Street East south of the intersection, were temporarily closed to traffic after the accident on Sunday.

In the hour prior to the accident, there was a hit and run incident near the Sonoma Plaza; CHP spokesperson Marc Rensbgerger was unable to confirm if the accidents were related.

Lt. Aaron Finnegan is the investigating officer at the Napa CHP.
