A pedestrian was severely injured, and her dog killed, on Saturday evening, April 17, in the crosswalk in front of Hopmonk Tavern on Broadway at about 9 p.m.

Sgt. Scott McKinnon, of the Sonoma police department confirmed the general details of the incident, saying that a vehicle heading southbound on Broadway, which had just left a nearby gas station, struck the pedestrian and pet in the crosswalk near the center divider. The male driver pulled over and remained on scene, according to McKinnon.

No drugs or alcohol were thought to be involved, according to McKinnon. However, he said, “The collision is still under investigation by our traffic division – this sort of incident does take a thorough investigation.”

The crosswalk at the intersection of Broadway and Andrieux Street has a pedestrian-activated alert lighting, a series of small “hockey-puck” lights in the street on either side of the crosswalk. It is not known if the pedestrian had activated the lights. The collision did occur within the designated crosswalk, said McKinnon.
