Crescent Montessori School, a primary Montessori school educating children aged 2.5-6 years old in Sonoma, is celebrating the launch of its after school program. Called MAS (Montessori After School), it is a first in the school’s 27-year history.

MAS utilizes the Montessori curriculum to engage children ages in a variety of subjects including yoga and mindfulness, clay in partnership with the Sonoma Community Center, art, dance and Montessori gym. The hours are 3-4:30 p.m. and take place in Crescent’s gardens at the community center. Beginning in August, non-Crescent enrolled children will also be invited to enroll in MAS.

Director and lead teacher Persy Kreider said, “One of the goals of MAS is to provide enrichment programs that support the Montessori education our children experience during the day. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that ‘movement is an essential factor of intellectual growth.’ Our exceptional program offers Montessori gym or physical literacy; a physical education class that respects the Montessori principles. Crescent Montessori is the only Montessori school in the area that offers a Physical Literacy program. Our MAS program allows children to stay active, creative, social and self-confident.”

Through a partnership with local nonprofit La Luz Center, Crescent Montessori will also award two full academic scholarships to children for the duration of their three-year Montessori Primary program. Crescent will be working with La Luz’s early education program, AVANCE, to identify interested students.

“We are delighted in partnering with Crescent Montessori in expanding the opportunities for education to the Latino community and the community as a whole,” said La Luz programs director Sandy Sanchez.

Crescent’s board president Kinh O’Brien said, “We are passionate about ensuring that our thoughtful Montessori programs are accessible for our entire community. Crescent's teachers are all native Spanish speakers, and Spanish is already woven into our Montessori curriculum. It is a natural fit."

Crescent Montessori School has open enrollment throughout the year. Those interested in Crescent’s programs should email or visit to learn more.
