Creekside students: ?‘The world is our canvas’

Community to decide if student art is really ‘better out than in'...|

They say “art” is a matter of opinion. Well, Sonoma, get ready to offer some opinions, because the Creekside High School series of public art installations will begin intriguing residents throughout the Valley this week.

Taking English public-art scalawag Banksy as their inspiration, Creekside students will offer a new installation daily in the community from May 26 to June 1.

According to teacher Walt Williams, the goal of the project – titled “Better Out Than In 2015. Bigger, Bolder and Usually With Permission” – is “to make you think, which you don’t do enough of by the way.”

“(It’s) about students, about art, about issues and about yourself and how you fit into this big town and small world,” says Williams.

Each day a new project will appear in the community along with an explanation on the CHS website, creeksidehs.org. Participating venues include Sonoma Valley High School, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, the Sonoma Community Center, the Community Café and the Sebastiani Theatre.

Adds Williams: “The town is the canvas, the brush is student creativity.”
