The long-awaited Groundwater Sustainability Agency of the Sonoma Valley basin is getting closer to a full roster. The City of Sonoma is currently looking for their representation on the 12-member local GSA, to join the six members already named to the new regional body, tasked with helping secure groundwater sustainability for the Sonoma Valley groundwater basin.

The intent of the committee is to provide community perspective and participation, and among its members are representatives from land-use interests, local jurisdictions like the City of Sonoma, and water boards and agencies. The Advisory Committee will review and/or provide recommendations to the Board on groundwater-related issues that may include development, adoption or amendment of the Groundwater Sustainability Plan, sustainability goals and objectives, best management practices and monitoring programs among others.

Six members have already been appointed to the SV GSA. They are Norman Gilroy (representing the Rural Residential zone), Matt Stornetta (agriculture), Caitlin Cornwall (environmental), Helge Bruckner (business), and at-large community representatives Vicki Hill and Kenneth Johnson.

Still to be named are the six Advisory Committee members from the City of Sonoma, North Bay Water District, Sonoma County, Sonoma County Water Agency, Sonoma Resource Conservation District and the Valley of the Moon Water District.

The member from the City of Sonoma must vote in the city (which usually means a resident), and will be appointed for a two-year term. The City encourages candidates with experience and familiarity with groundwater and its management. The City will also give preference to applicants with experience working with diverse community-based groups.

Information about the Sonoma Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency is available at sonomacountygroundwater.org/sv.

Applications are due to the City Clerk, Rebekah Barr, at rbarr@sonomacity.org by 4 p.m, next Thursday, Sept. 21. A link to more information and the application can be found on the City's home page at sonomacity.org.
