As part of a larger campus beautification project, 20 wine barrels have appeared around the Sonoma Valley High School campus, filled with color, plants and, soon, ceramics and art sculptures.
According to media art teacher Peter Hansen, the goal is for teachers or student clubs to each adopt a barrel and tend to it.
“I can imagine possible competitions, community involvement, and a garden club for kids to learn about plants, planting, watering, soil and nature,” said Hansen.
“It’s a small thing, but the current 20 really are a lovely addition, they lift the spirits and engage students in the process.”
The project was a joint effort by Hansen, math teacher Tammy Rivara and history teacher Andy Gibson, who began working on the idea on the first day of school.
“Out students kicked it off for Dragon Day,” said Hansen.
