270-unit storage facility going up at Napa Rd. and Eighth St. East

Have you driven by and wondered, ‘What is being built there?’|

Drivers passing the corner of Napa Road and Eighth Street East this fall may have puzzled over the brush clearing and ground leveling, and the large green fence now encircling the 4.71-acre property.

Since 2016, 1010 Napa Road has been owned by Santa Rosa resident Gary Van Cleave, who also owns a seamless gutter company in Cotati. Van Cleave is now building a 65,000-square-foot storage facility with more than 200 air-conditioned units as well as 70 non-air conditioned drive-up units, some of which will be large enough for boat storage. He’ll offer 1,500 square feet of climate-controlled wine lockers and 3,000 square feet for bulk wine storage on pallets, with a diesel back-up generator in case of power failures. There will be also be more than 70 RV parking spaces.

“It’s going to be a nice, modern, clean and bright facility,” said Van Cleave. “And state-of-the-art security cameras will cover the entire property.”

According to Van Cleave, there are currently no air-conditioned storage units available in Sonoma.

Van Cleave expects his facility, to be called Vineburg Wine and Self Storage, to open in summer 2020. A big “Coming Soon” sign will be erected next week on Napa Road.

Van Cleave’s property runs parallel to an existing outdoor RV vehicle storage facility, Sonoma RV Storage at 1050 Napa Road. Owner Victor Hunter bought his 6.89 acre property in 2013 years ago and he believes the RV storage business on his property dates back to the mid-1980s.

Van Cleave bought 1010 Napa Road for $2 million in October 2016. Vineburgstorage.com.
