The Soul Section to shake things up at Sonoma’s next Tuesday Night Market

You are welcome to stay in your chair. You really are. This is still America. I certainly will not be shaking my booty. But I may be all alone in my self-imposed sedentariness.

You see, if you are prone to dancing, particularly if you harbor an inner Soul Train-like catalog of fancy dance moves, next Tuesday is right up your alley.

The band hired to shake it all up at the Tuesday Night Market on Sept. 5, The Soul Section, is an eight-piece group that sports an additional invisible but irresistible player — let’s call him Dr. Groove.

The band’s leader and frontman is Kevin Mulligan. The sole Sonoman in the band, he is a soulful and kinetic force.

Keeping everybody honest is drummer Michael J Perez. Pete Donery is the bass player. His bass is a bump machine. All three of these musicians are alumni of the much-loved Motown and Soul review band the Violet Fox Band. This is where these three musicians became partners with Dr. Groove.

Gus Scherer is the rock- and blues-influenced guitarist and Vince Nash is a wonderfully talented keyboard player. The band boasts three horn players, all female: Jane Fossgreen on sax, Ella Steinberg on trumpet and Sara Cummings on trombone.

Nash appeared with the Kerry Daly Band when it played at Murphy’s a while back. And longtime Sonoma music lovers might have seen the Violet Fox band when it played at the now defunct Cabaret Sauvignon, the excellent club that was upstairs in the Sebastiani Theatre building, in 1992.

On Sept. 5, look for songs by the Stones, the Meters, Average White Band, Otis, Tina and Kool. All told, this will be a rockin’ and fun band to see at the market. Dr. Groove will be leading the way, starting at 6 p.m.
