Sonoma’s Tuesday Night Farmers Market to get a dose of Bob Dylan

Live entertainment at the Tuesday Night Farmers Market on May 16 will be provided by the band Tangled Up in Blue. Fronted by Sonoman Richard Sumberg, the band specializes in playing versions of some of Bob Dylan’s best songs.

Sumberg has cultivated a fairly uncanny vocal similarity to Dylan. Also a singer/songwriter, Sumberg sings and sounds more like Dylan than Dylan himself these days. Fans of the bard have grown accustomed to hearing different vocal styles over the years; Sumberg’s seems to fall right around Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” sound.

Sumberg calls Dylan’s 1975 release, “Blood on the Tracks,” his favorite of Dylan’s 39 studio albums. “Tangled” plays several songs from that great record, considered to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time. In fact, Sumberg draws the name of his band from one of the songs on that record.

But for a Dylan cover/tribute band, there is no shortage of material. He also cites Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” and “Highway 61” as favorites. Sumberg also touted Dylan’s newest album, “Rough and Rowdy Ways,” as outstanding and “lyrically brilliant.”

For those of you keeping score at home, the musicians in this band are Sumberg playing rhythm guitar and providing lead vocals. Tom Wolfe plays bass guitar and Fred Holzhauer plays lead guitar. Dennis Messier is the drummer.

A tragedy befell the band last year when longtime member and harmonica virtuoso Corey Jennings passed away. “I miss the hell out of Corey, as we all do,” Sumberg said.

Jennings was a longtime collaborator with Sumberg. They were members in Hard Travellin’, the band that preceded Tangled Up in Blue. It was during this time that Sumberg changed gears a tad and embraced the Dylan thing.

“Every time I would play someplace, people would come up to me and say ‘You sound like Bob Dylan.’” he said. “I became tired of hearing that and thought I might just start a Dylan tribute band. It just kind of made sense.”

Sumberg started “Tangled” six or seven years ago.

As always, the market will begin at 5:30 p.m. and music will start as the clock strikes six. Low lawn chairs are allowed and dancing is encouraged.
