Sonoma’s historical Sebastiani Theatre is about to turn 90-years-old. To mark this milestone, the theater is hosting an anniversary party, “A Step Back in Time,” on April 6.

The stately structure was designed by renowned architect James W. Reid, who also drew plans for San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel and Call Building, which was then the tallest structure west of Chicago.

The theater was built in 1933 and opened in April of 1934. The first movie screened there was “The Fugitive Lovers” starring Robert Montgomery.

With its Italian Renaissance design, and tower standing taller than the neighboring City Hall, the theater soon became a regional landmark. The metal marquee and glorious neon lights, supplied by nearby Mission Hardware, cemented the structure as a North Bay architectural marvel.

Over its 90 years, the theater has shown hundreds of movies and been the scene of dozens of notable events. One of the larger events was the world premiere of “Toy Story” in 1995.

The theater’s next big event is an evening of stellar entertainment, “A Step Back in Time,” with a 1930s theme. The doors will open on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for a wine and hors d’ourves reception, followed by live music and a magic program until 9:30.

The list of performers is lengthy but impressive; featuring the Sebastiani House Band, Roger Rhoten, Zee Hubbard, Sonoma Conservatory of Dance, Ballet Folklorico Quetzalen, Diego Garcia, Sean Carscadden Trio, Lexy Fridell, Tommy Thomsen, The Stephanie Ozer Trio, and Italian tenor Pasquale Esposito.

The Singing Auctioneer Ellen Toscano will keep things moving as emcee and auctioneer of many fundraising items.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1930s attire and drop lots of 2024 dollars at the special event.

The funds will go towards maintenance and operation of this community jewel. There are costly plans afoot to improve the facility, so donations are always welcome.

Tickets, both VIP and general admission, can be purchased at https://www.sebastianitheatre.com/.
