A ‘Call of the Wild Weekend’ in Glen Ellen

Family fun activities include music and hikes|

The gorgeous park on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain, Jack London State Historic Park, is the site of a fun family weekend, replete with live music, taking place on Sunday, May 19. Billed as “Call of the Wild 2024,” the day will feature interesting and free activities to keep everybody entertained.

The day opens with a “Family and Friends” hike, sign-ups required. The jaunt takes off at 10 a.m. Guided nature activities for kids eight years and under will take place in the Eucalyptus Grove at 11 a.m. Displays of early internal combustion farm equipment engines, wool spinning and blacksmithing are also for the viewing.

Local non-profit ArtEscape will lead family art projects starting at 11 a.m.

Sizzling burgers will be cooked up by the good folks of the Rotary of Sonoma Valley, and Wicked Slush ice cream will be there to sooth the sweet tooth, according their website.

The musical entertainment has been organized by Music in Place. Performing are the Ron Sfarzo North Beach Trio, and — please excuse the shameless plug here — The Cork Pullers and Curley and Curlier.

Sfarzo and his trio will perform contemporary, country, blues, jazz, and international music. They are Ron Sfarzo on accordion, Dr. Bob Markinson playing clarinet, trumpet, flute, pocket piccolo, and David Sturdevant on guitar, harmonica and vocals.

The Cork Pullers are a local trio consisting of myself playing guitar and mandoline, Gary Halter on guitar, and Bo O’Hara playing the bass guitar. All three musicians also sing. Curtis Duff will round out the band’s sound by playing his dobro. The Pullers play a familiar and fun blend of folk-y/pop-y/rock-y material, with strong vocals and harmonies. We will deliver a family friendly and interactive sing along kind of show, aimed at children ages 3-5.

The event is free and offers a multi-faceted way to visit and enjoy this beautiful part of our valley.
