Giant Di Rosa sculpture moves front and center

‘For Veronica’ by Mark di Suvero moved to location originally envisioned at Napa Valley preserve.|

Mark di Suvero’s art sculpture named “For Veronica” has been on the campus of di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art since 1993, but it wasn’t installed where founder Rene di Rosa and di Suvero envisioned because Napa County would not approve the location at that time. Instead “For Veronica” was installed on a hill in the sculpture garden.

Through county approval and donations to pay for moving the 30-foot, 9,000 pound sculpture, di Suvero’s piece is now located on the hillside in front of Winery Lake where it is visible from all around.

Previous attempts to move the sculpture were made over the years, but this time around a coordinated effort worked. Michael Muscardini, a local winemaker, art lover and developer led the way supported by volunteers and donations that came in from engineers, crane operators and concrete contractors.

Di Suvero’s sculptures have appeared in public outdoor spaces around the world and in museums. He received the National Medal of Arts from former President Barack Obama in 2010, and in 2013 the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art installed seven of his sculptures along Crissy Field.
