Celebrate the art of dance in Sonoma

Here’s where you can enjoy the art of dance in Sonoma Valley. Whether you’re a dancer or you enjoy dance performances, Sonoma has many opportunities to enjoy the beauty of movement.|

In an area abundant with artistic and musical opportunities, whether it be listening to music, playing music, or creating fine arts; the art of dance is sometimes forgotten. However, this artistic practice of movement is alive and well in Sonoma.

The valley offers many dance-related opportunities. The Community Center hosts a country line dancing class every other week. Vintage House offers hula dance lessons and you can shake it at Little Wiggle Room’s classic rock and blues night on May 18.

The Sonoma Conservatory of Dance has taught young dancers the art of ballet since its founding in 1970.

A nonprofit dedicated to fostering creative spirit, the conservatory offers a variety of classes for kids as young as 18 months to adults with advanced skills, ages 18 and up.

Gathering within the mirror-lined walls of the studio at the corner of Broadway and McDonell Street, tutu attired dancers master arabesques, pirouettes and the ever-popular pas de deux.

One of the conservatory’s big annual events is coming April 27 and 28 at the Sebastiani Theatre. The dance troupe will perform “The Magic Grove,” with both shows at 1 p.m.

“The Magic Grove” is a 13th century folktale said to be about “an act of kindness returned tenfold.” The ballet is accompanied by a score composed by Matt Arnerich and Sonoma resident and cello expert Michael Fecskes.

The story itself is Cinderella-like and centered on a character named Vidya. A cow herder, Vidya toils on the hot plains of northern India, and protects a snake from the evil shake charmers.
