Book launches, hike with Glen Ellen author Tracy Salcedo

After a pandemic postponement, Glen Ellen author Tracy Salcedo will celebrate the release of her 2020 titles, “Search and Rescue Alaska” and the third edition of “Hiking Lassen Volcanic National Park,” which won the prestigious National Outdoor Book Award for “Outdoor Adventure Guidebook,” in two events hosted by Readers’ Books in Sonoma.

Salcedo’s first appreance will take place on Sunday, April 3 at 2 p.m. in the Reading Garden, and kicks off Readers’ Books’ spring hiking series. The program will feature readings from both books as well as conversation about Salcedo’s evolution as a guidebook writer and as the author of essays about the natural and human histories of national parks and other wildlands.

The celebration continues on Sunday, April 10, when Salcedo joins author Susan Alcorn to help lead a guided hike on the Overlook Trail near downtown Sonoma. That event will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Readers’ Books with a presentation by Alcorn, author of “Walk, Hike, Saunter: Seasoned Women Share Tales and Trails.” The hike will follow.

“Hiking Lassen Volcanic National Park” is one of more than 20 guidebooks Salcedo has written about destinations in California and Colorado for FalconGuides, a publisher of adventure guidebooks. “Search and Rescue Alaska” is her most recent book of essays from Lyons Press and includes stories of perseverance and resilience. Salcedo is also editor at large with the Kenwood Press.

“I’m delighted to finally be able to celebrate these two books,” Salcedo said in an announcement of the events. “The Lassen guide has always been a favorite, simply because the park is so remarkable. The stories in ‘Search and Rescue Alaska’ are extraordinary and larger than life, just like the state. I’m excited to finally be able to celebrate these places and people in my place with my people, here in Sonoma Valley.”

Salcedo has not been idle since 2020. The third edition of “Best Easy Day Hikes Boulder” was released in 2021; the third edition of “Best Easy Day Hikes Denver” is set for release in late spring 2022; and she is currently working on a second edition of “Hiking Waterfalls in Northern California.”
