Four Arts Guild of Sonoma members were selected for the upcoming de Young Museum “Open“ exhibit in honor of its 125 year anniversary. Out of thousands of art submitted from nine Bay Area counties 763 artists and their works were chosen for the exhibition. Sonoma Valley artists chosen were Kirk Hinshaw, Mark Zukowski, Sarah Delson and Katerina Capetanos.

The de Young “Open” runs from Oct. 10 through Jan. 3, 2021 via the de Young Open Web Gallery at deyoungopenexhibition.artcall.org/pages/web-gallery.

The public is invited to see the work of these artists at the Arts Guild of Sonoma gallery from Nov. 5 through Dec. 28. The exhibit includes mixed media, photography, painting and encaustic artwork.

Mixed media artist Kirk Hinshaw’s collage artwork selected by the de Young, "Wrestling with My Dreams,“ was created from his collection of Japanese papers and ephemera. The collage is on wooden panels, covered with layered papers used in construction of Japanese screens. His mix of floating collage imagery often invites the viewer’s own interpretation of a story.

Photographer Mark Zukowski’s image chosen - and sold the first night of the de Young show - is called “Nick’s at Night” and is a tribute to his capturing a sense of place.

Graphic artist Sarah Delson's piece in the de Young, "Dialing Sisyphus," deals with that myth in a modern, psychological context. Her pieces showing at the Guild are from her newest series about motion and memory. All her work focuses on the magic of commonplace objects, seeking the stories within. Repetitive patterns reflect what she witnesses in textiles, nature and conversation.

New Arts Guild member Katerina Capetanos’s image “Cordelia,” selected by the de Young, exemplifies the whimsical play of form and medium. Capetanos brings her experience as a biologist to explore natural world themes in encuastic and mixed media.

The Arts Guild of Sonoma is celebrating its 43rd anniversary. 140 E. Napa St. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. artsguildofsonoma.org.
