Veteran winemaker Robert Rex will discuss how to manage the use of sulfites to protect against oxidation in a presentation in Sonoma at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Sonoma Home Winemakers are hosting the talk, which will focus on blending and preserving wine.

In addition to being a longtime winemaker at Deerfield Ranch Winery, Rex is a chemist and applies the latest technology to longstanding winemaking traditions. Deerfield Ranch wines have had 47 wines rated over 90 points, according to an announcement about the event.

“Robert will talk about the number one problem facing home winemakers - oxidation, and the balancing act of adding the right amount of sulfites to preserve it,” said J.W. Nickel, president of Sonoma Home Winemakers, in press release announcing the event.

The Sonoma Home Winemakers is a group that promotes “the fine art” of winemaking. They meet at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at Vintage House senior center, 264 First St. E. For information, email grapes@sonomahomewine.org.
