New store opens on Sonoma Plaza

When Jennifer Edwards’ gallery and studio began outgrowing its space at the Barlow marketplace in Sebastopol, she knew exactly where she wanted to find a larger space. She wanted to be on the Plaza in Sonoma.

The Passdoor first established itself as a fine art gallery five years ago and, since that time, Edwards has added broader design items like handmade jewelry, textiles and home furnishings.

The word “passdoor” is used in architecture to describe a small door installed in an extra large door for quick passage.

“In 2010, I named my art gallery and design studio concept ‘the Passdoor’ in reference to offering an entrance into the vast world of original art and original design,” said Edwards.

Items in her 2,000-square-foot studio range in price from $30 to $8,000 and most, if not all, pieces were handcrafted in Sonoma County.

Former Sonoma Valley Museum of Art executive director Lia Transue is working with Edwards and her staff at the studio.

The design studio and gallery have a website at thepassdoor.net.

It is open on the Plaza (in the space formerly occupied by Terra Firma Gallery) every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Passdoor will celebrate its grand opening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. during next Thursday’s downtown Sonoma Art Walk, Nov. 1, at 452 First St. E.
