Winslow, Sherwood wrap stellar youth wrestling seasons

It’s been a stellar youth wrestling season for a pair of Valley middle-school boys, Tyler Winslow and Ryan Sherwood, who recently completed their mat campaigns grappling at one of the highest-level events, the Reno World Nationals.

For the Altimira seventh-grade standout Winslow, the season has been a busy one in which he compiled an undefeated middle school campaign with four first-place tournament finishes, along with a third place, and impressive efforts at two premier competitions.

Wrestling for Altimira in the North Valley League, Winslow posted a 14-0 record, while in tourney action he took home first-place medals from Windsor, Vacaville, American Canyon and the Meat Grinder tournament in Sacramento, where he also earned a third-place medal at the Louie Pastuer event.

Qualifying for, and competing in, the challenging California junior high Tournament of Champions, Winslow, the only seventh-grader to reach the medal stand, earned himself a state championship sixth-place medal.

At the prestigious season-ending Reno World Nationals, where 38 states, as well as some other countries, were represented, Winslow rose to the occasion by registering a 4-2 record and claiming a sixth-place medal in the 13-years-old-and-under 120-pound weight class.

En route to his Reno medal, Winslow – finishing the season with an impressive 38-6 overall record, with five of his losses coming at the state and Reno national events – pinned opponents from Washington and Utah in the first round; decisioned foes from Oregon and Texas; and dropped 4-2 and 11-6 decisions to California and Oregon boys, respectively.

As for Adele Harrison seventh-grader standout Sherwood, he was an unbeaten NVL champion for the second straight season – going 12-0 in 2013 and 13-0 this year – and then joined Winslow at the Reno World Nationals.

Sherwood ended up dropping both his matches to opponents from Alabama and Washington, and finished his season with a solid 14-2 record at 105 pounds in the 13-and-under age group.
