William (Bill) Raaka Jr.

Dr. William (Bill) Raaka Jr. was a physician known throughout Sonoma for his kindness and intelligence, love of his family and passion for golf.  He passed away in his home from complications of cardiac amyloidosis on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, surrounded by his family.  He was 72 years old.

Born and raised in San Diego, Dr. Raaka graduated from Stanford University and earned his medical degree from UCSF School of Medicine.

He practiced as an opthalmologist in Sonoma for more than 37 years.

He and the love of his life, Bev, moved to the Valley in 1974.  Married for more than 48 years, they had adventures all over the world, developed lasting friendships and raised two wonderful sons, Scott and Brian.  Dr. Raaka was a gifted woodworker, golfer and gardener who also loved fly-fishing, skiing and trips to Tahoe.  Known in his family as “Papa Bill,” he was devoted to his grandkids, Lily and Carson, and lovingly helped teach them to ski, ride bikes, build snowmen, fly kites and swing a mean golf club.

Dr. Raaka is survived by his wife, Bev; sons, Scott and Brian; brothers, Clay and Bob; grandchildren, Lily and Carson; daughter-in-law, Emily and beloved grand-dog, Edward.

In accordance with Dr. Raaka’s wishes there will be no funeral service.

Donations in his honor may be made to Hospice or any charity of your choice.
