Wellander inducted into SSU Hall of Fame

While the Valley’s Danae Wellander was a multiple-sport prep standout, basketball was her specialty, and, after an all-league, All-Empire career at Sonoma Valley High School, she took her talent, athleticism and determination to the upper level of college hoops.

On Saturday, Wellander, a 2003 SVHS graduate, received a special honor for her hardwood achievements – being inducted as a member of the Sonoma State University’s Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2014.

With athletic excellence and contributions to the university’s history of athletics being the main criteria for the honored inductees, Wellander, who impacted the SSU women’s hoops team and record books, was a slam dunk for the Hall of Fame.

After playing one season on an athletic scholarship at the University of San Francisco, Wellander transferred to Santa Rosa Junior College, where she earned Bay Valley Conference player of the year and first-team all-state honors.

Upon arriving at Sonoma State University, Wellander was an instant game-changer, guiding the Woman Seawolves to two of their best seasons ever, while becoming the only two-time first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association pick in the SSU program's history.

In just two seasons at SSU, Wellander led the Seawolf women to a 34-23 record and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, ranking 16th among the school's all-time scoring leaders, and is fourth in assists, which includes leading the CCAA in assists and coming close to the program's all-time record with 146.
