The group Vox Populi will perform a benefit concert for the Sonoma Valley Woman’s Club at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the club, 574 First St. E.
This is the first in a series of concerts the club will host in order to purchase an air conditioning system. Tickets for Friday’s concert are $18 and can be purchased at Tiddle E. Winks or Readers’ Books.
Formed in 2008, Vox Populi is a community choir in Sonoma and the brainchild of local musician Mark Dennis.
The choir has swelled to more than 60 fun-loving people who love to sing, who perform multi-harmony versions of well-known rock and roll songs. Their powerful performances with sweet harmonies and memorable tunes have brought both smiles and tears to sold-out audiences.
For over 112 years, the Sonoma Valley Woman’s Club mission has been the same as it was in 1901 when the club was established – to work toward community improvement and perform social services.
Eleven pioneering women established the Sonoma Valley Woman’s Club on Sept. 21, 1901, with the goal of beautifying downtown Sonoma. These women began by cleaning up the Plaza, building the pond and planting trees to make it the beautiful park residents and visitors enjoy today.
They also established the first library in Sonoma, restored Mission San Francisco Solano and were the original sponsors of the Sonoma Valley Hospital Auxiliary.
Through various fundraising efforts, the club raises money to help the youth of the Valley through scholarships and books for school libraries.
The club also donates to various local charities, in addition to maintaining its historic clubhouse and yard.
In 1913, with a loan from the Native Sons of the Golden West, members were able to build the Craftsman-style clubhouse on First Street East.
The largest source of income toward building maintenance and enhancement is rental income.
Because the building is not air-conditioned, the club loses income during the warm summer months. The club is currently raising money to add air conditioning to the building and to beautify the side and back yard of the property.
