Mexico’s independence from Spain was celebrated on the Plaza Sunday with a daylong agenda of dance, music, food and ceremony. Among the dancers were these celebrants from Balet Folklórico Quetzalen. The day honors “El Grito de la Independencia” (the Cry of Independence), which was uttered by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato, on Sept. 16, 1810, the moment that launched the Mexican War of Independence.
