Vintage House offers evening hula class

Vintage House senior center and Hula Mai will be offering a hula class from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays starting Sept. 10.

“It’s time,” said Marissa Fitrakis, program coordinator at Vintage House. “So many people have told us they would love to take evening classes and attend lectures, but can’t come to day-time events because they are either working or have other daytime obligations. We are delighted to be offering more evening classes and lectures this year. We are especially happy that Betty Ann Bruno, who founded Hula Mai after she retired from her career in TV news, has agreed to give up one evening a week so more interested women would have an opportunity to join Hula Mai.”

Bruno said just about everybody has been to the Islands, so people always enjoy our programs.

“The shows are also wonderful experiences for our dancers because they have so much fun and feel so glamorous when they can be in a show. And, along the way, the women have developed a close and supportive sisterhood; it’s truly quite remarkable,” Bruno said. In the classes, Hula Mai builds a foundation of basic hula steps as the students learn a couple of easy dances. Bruno said, however, that she is looking forward to adding depth and complexity to the evening classes as students develop the skills for higher levels of hula.

The cost is $10 per class for Vintage House members and $15 per class for non-members.
