The Sonoma/Petaluma State Historic Parks Association, is producing “Two Gentlemen of Sonoma” starting today, Friday, July 11 at the Sonoma Barracks.

Net proceeds from the production will go to support the association’s work in providing funding for school tours, interpretive programs and repairs to the historic buildings which make up the Sonoma Historic Park.

The production is a lively adaptation of William Shakespeare’s first comedy restaged in pre-1840s Northern California with Sonoma and Petaluma replacing Verona and Milan. Historical figures Gen. Vallejo, and Capt. John Sutter make appearances as Shakespeare’s Duke of Milan and Thurio.

The production will be staged against the historic backdrop of the courtyard of the Sonoma Barracks.

It was produced first in Petaluma at the Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park in 2012 to critical acclaim.

Director, Lucas McClure, has assembled a cast of veteran actors including, Gary Grossman, Dan Monez, Greeta Ahart, Ross Berger, Jocelynn Murphy, Devin O’Brien, Jorge Covarrubias, Sidney Schwindt, Moises Chavez, Remington Stone and Travis Brown. This is Shakespeare’s only play with a dog so the cast includes Jasper, a roly-poly Chihuahua, who just might steal the show. Jasper is well-known to customers of “Joe to Go” Coffee at Friedman Brothers in Sonoma.

Show times are Fridays and Saturdays, July 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 and Aug. 1 and 2.

The Sonoma Barracks is located on the north side of the Sonoma Plaza. Entry will be from the back gate fronting onto the parking lot off First Street East. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7.

There will be wine and soft drinks for sale.

This is an out-of-doors production so patrons should dress appropriately.

Tickets are $25, discounted tickets for full time students, military and arks association members with ID are $20.

Tickets are available through the Sonoma Community Center Box Office either online at sonomacommunitycenter.org or by calling 938-4626.
