Trust hospital board on CEO pay

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I have read all the comments in the Index-Tribune regarding the controversial bonus paid to Sonoma Valley Hospital’s incumbent CEO, Kelly Mather.

After 22 years in nursing, I barely recognize health care at times. I understand the frustration about Mather’s bonus, but feel it is misguided.

While I completely understand the public’s perception of “losses” and “cuts,” it is imperative to remember that a freestanding community hospital is on the endangered species list, as is the qualified and compassionate CEO.

Fiscal responsibility starts at the top, and there should not be a race to the bottom when it comes to retaining a qualified leader with a proven track record.

Sonoma is a beautiful community with a true sense of dedication to its hospital. The hospital has opened its new emergency department and surgical area under the direction of Kelly Mather. Again, be very thoughtful when wanting to exercise the cheapest option. You will get what you pay for.

An investment in retaining a solid leader, who needs to live and work in a community that has become increasingly cost prohibitive, will pay off.

Alternatively, there are many “big box” hospital corporations that would love to come in and acquire the hospital, so perhaps it’s time to trust the members of the hospital board that serves SVH, as well as their judgment.
