It’s treason to block U.S. debt payment

Letter to the Editor

By I-T letters

Editor, Index-Tribune:

Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution states, “The Congress shall have the Power to lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States; To borrow Money on credit of the United States,” etc.

Then the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, in Section 4, includes, “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.”

I believe that anyone in Congress who tries to block the Constitutional requirements honoring U.S. debts is bordering on treason.

Is this opinion from a constitutional lawyer or a Sunday afternoon sofa quarter back?

    • Tom Sokolowski

Robert, I believe Richard’s opinion is neither that of a Constitutional lawyer or an afternoon sofa quarterback; rather I think it’s from an angry American who’s very angry that a small group of Republican extremists tried to throw our country into a financial catastrophe; unsuccessfully I might add.

      • Robert Piazza

I think you the sequence of events and the players wrong Tom!
The progressive liberals in Washington have already thrown this country into a financial catastrophe; VERY successfully I might add!
Now they are trying to do the same with our Constitutional Republic and are well on their way to being successful.
It’s the Tea Party folks that keep throwing wrenches into the liberal machinery, quite successfully, I might add!

I have a feeling you are going to be very disappointed with the mid term elections!
Obamacare will be wrench that shifts the senate to the conservatives and strengthens their hold on the house. Just listen to the liberal media and you’ll hear it first hand. Even they are moving toward the center……

        • Tom Sokolowski

Robert, “The progressive liberals in Washington have already thrown this country into a financial catastrophe?” Then please explain how after Obama took office we’ve gone from losing seven hundred thousand jobs a month under Bush to gaining a couple hundred thousand jobs a month under Obama, along the stock market doubling and our unemployment rate declining, while getting us out of Iraq and killing Osama Bin Laden. Obama and his “liberal” ideas have saved American from an economic catastrophe caused by Republican policies under Bush that we haven’t seen since 1929.

Robert, you said: “It’s the Tea Party folks that keep throwing wrenches into the liberal machinery, quite successfully, I might add!” Don’t you really mean to say throwing wrenches into America? Richards’s point of bringing to trial those responsible for the shutdown undermining America is making more and more sense.

You “feel” America is shifting conservative? I would “feel” that too if all I watched was Fox News and listened to Rush and Beck; but nfortunately, facts get in the way of your argument. Current polling shows Republicans at an all time low with most Americans correctly blaming Republicans for their useless and unsuccessful government shutdown that cost you and me 24 billion dollars. And for what? I want my money back!!!

The more informed minds that I trust say that the threat of actual Treasury default did not exist at all, it was just a scare tactic. There was/is more than enough revenue coming in to meet mandated spending and the interest on the debt. Though it was symbolic political posturing doomed to fail its stated goal of defunding the ACA before it even began. More fun to come in January.

    • Tom Sokolowski

You’re right in saying there would be enough revenue to pay for our interest on our debt, but how about the things we depend on besides interest payments: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, our military, homeland security, airport security, the FBI, CIA, to only name a few.

I thought you guys were all about fiscal accountability and economic stability; guess we can lay that myth to rest. Thank God the Tea Party is going to be voted out this election cycle in big numbers before they can do any more damage to this country.

      • Phineas Worthington

Got those covered with “mandated spending” Tom.

I have disabused myself of the idea that either party value fiscal accountability or economic stability. Though it is only the Republicans who even defend such values with their words. The deeds to back them up of course don’t exist. And that is why conservative voters don’t show up.

And I agree that if the Republicans don’t get much smarter about tactics, they will continue to lose elections regardless of the last remaining good principles they only pay lip service to. Its tough to compete with a party that will promise unlimited benefits to all at the expense of someone else for the small price of an anonymous vote.

  • Tom Sokolowski

Richard, thanks for your letter. There’s a case to be made for taking these Republican Tea Partiers to court on sedition charges, but got a feeling it just won’t happen. At least how about them paying us back the 24 billion they lost to us by their pointless government shutdown stunt? And how about paying us back the 24 billion out of their own pockets!

    Tom,
I watch MSNBC, CNN and ABC in addition to Fox News. I consider that “balanced” news. Do you?
The decline in employment started in 2008 as a result of the last two years of the Bush administration having to compromise with a a liberal Democratic house and senate. Remember the $800 million stimulus Nancy and Harry wanted and Obama concurred? Obama had the advantage of that same legislature during the first two years of his 1st administration and the only think he did was get the Non Affordable Health Care bill secreted though congress at the dark of night, with none of the legislators reading it before voting! Oh yes, he also got another $400 million stimulus package. $1.2 trillion dollars and 5 years later and the unemployment rate is above 7.5% and the welfare rolls have more than doubled.

Our military has been all but neutered. We now have our former allies very upset with us, namely the UK, France, Germany, Israel and Saudi Arabia due to our lack of a consistent foreign policy. We have doubled our debt in the past 4 years thanks to that Democratic congress I mentioned and this lame duck President.

Yes, Hope and Change has certainly been good for the USA! The progressive liberal agenda is destroying our republic from within. I would not want to think you are a party to that, Tom!
Are you? Tom, open your eyes and ears before it’s too late!
