Stompers pepper, pound Pittsburg

Playing like the weather, hot, the Sonoma Stompers continued their strong Pacific Association of Professional Baseball League second-half start by posting a pair of solid victories over the Pittsburg Mettle at Arnold Field.

On Tuesday night, the Stompers got six shutout innings of five-hit pitching from Eric Schwieger and a three-hit, two-RBI game by Jayce Ray in a 6-2 triumph over visiting Pittsburg.

Sonoma was also led past the Mettle by Andrew Parker's single, two RBIs and one runs scored; Charlie Mirabal's single and two runs; Joel Carranza's single and RBI; Steve Rinaudo's single and a run; Reid Chenworth and Glenn Walker's single each; and Jamie Del Valle and Matt Marquis' run apiece.

With a bottom-of-the-first-inning outburst that saw 13 batters come to the plate en route to scoring seven runs, the Stompers didn’t look back in cruising to a 10-1 rout of Pittsburg Wednesday evening and made a winner of Randy Consuegra in his Sonoma pitching debut.

While Consuegra – a native of Barranquilla, Colombia, and a long-time friend of new teammate Del Valle – got the mound win by striking out eight in five innings, yielding just two hits and two walks, Sonoma's Ray extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games and Carranza’s took over the league's RBI lead at 38.

Leading the Stompers were TJ Gavlik's three-for-four, including two doubles and three runs; Carranza's two-for-four, with a loaded-bases-clearing double, four RBIs and one run; Del Valle's two-for-three with an RBI and run; Mirabal's single, two RBIs and a run; Matt Marquis' single and two runs; Ray's single, RBI and run; Rinaudo's RBI and Chenworth's run.

Sonoma, which ended its three-game set with the Mettle last night – results not available at presstime – opens a three-game series in Vallejo tonight, before returning home to host the Admirals at Arnold Field beginning at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5.
