Stephen Everett Cox

Stephen Everett Cox, M.D., of Redding, died at home of natural causes on July 20, 2014, at the age of 84.

He was born on Aug. 15, 1929, to Alan and Barbara Cox in Portland, Oregon, as the eldest of three sons. He attended high school and college in Portland and graduated in 1958 from the University of Oregon Medical School.

In 1961, he married Sally Grimshaw, M.D. They latter settled in Sonoma, and adopted a baby girl. Dr. Cox specialized in internal medicine in Sonoma for several years before moving his practice to the Sacramento area. In 1972, he married Michelle McGlynn with whom he raised two sons.

More recently, he relocated to Redding, which he appreciated for its proximity to Mount Shasta and beautiful Sundial Bridge.

Dr. Cox was an accomplished amateur pianist with a live-long love of classical music. He liked hiking and Shakespeare and often returned to his beloved Oregon to enjoy both, attending the theater in Ashland and exploring the Rogue River Valley on foot. In his later years, he developed a passion for cooking and baking.

He is survived by brothers, Phil and Larry; sons, Adam (with Amy) and Jason (with Linda); daughter, Emily (with Stuart); and seven grandchildren, Cadence, Clayton, Adin, Allysah, Esther, Emily and Zoe.

In accordance with Dr. Cox’s wishes there will be no funeral service. A memorial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, with services pending. Donations in honor of the deceased may be made to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival or the charity of your choice.
