With lots of fresh water runoff into the North Bay, sturgeon fishing went from good to great this week. Keith Fraser at Loch Lomond Bait Shop in San Rafael reports numerous boats bringing home limits of large sturgeon from the “triangle” and also reported catching and releasing numerous oversized sturgeon as well. Keith added that there are tons of striped bass also being caught, some of them large.

The sturgeon triangle is a shallow area defined by China Camp, the Pump House and Buoy 5. The Petaluma River dumps a large amount of fresh water into that area of the bay.

Capt. Rick Powers at Bodega Bay Sportsfishing has been going out virtually every day and coming back with full limits of large Dungeness crabs plus limits of rockfish and one to two ling cod per angler on most trips. He will be running the crab and rockfish combo trips every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The rockfish season ends Dec. 31.

If you’re looking for a gift for your favorite angler both Keith and Rick offer gift certificates. Call them now to get them by Christmas.

Steve Kyle met up with guide Tyler Lee on the Eel River this week and sent in this report:

“The conditions were about as good as the coastal rivers can be in the winter. The river was classic steelhead green and dropping in level by the hour. We spent two days exploring the South Fork and main stem, stopping to fish the obvious spey style runs. I managed to hook one steelhead in the afternoon of the first day but that was the only fish we saw. We were hard at it until noon when the weather gods decided to send some snow and ice our way so we declared victory and headed in opposite directions to our respective homes.”

And just in case you are looking for the perfect gift, Steve would agree that the fly-fisher in your life would love a gift certificate for a day’s steelhead fishing with Jim Andras on the Rogue River. A day for one or two anglers is $450.

Jim’s wife, Rachel, who is a highly qualified fly-casting instructor, also offers half-day walk and wade guided fishing on the Rogue for $295. In addition she offers fly-casting lessons for $100 (three-hour lesson). Call Rachel at 530-227-4837 for details.
