Sonoma Valley’s basketball playoff season ends with loss

The Sonoma Valley boys basketball team found their playoff run cut short by a 57-30 loss to Piner High in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, Feb. 12. The Dragons’ season thus ends with a 16-12 overall record.

But Coach Mike Boles insisted, “This game will not define our season. We had a very good season and will focus on the positives and the memories.”

The Prospectors started off hot with four 3-point shots in the first quarter to pull ahead 15-9, a lead they never relinquished. In the second quarter the Dragons regained some ground and pulled within three points, but the momentum quickly shifted back to Piner as they finished the half with a 14-3 run to take a 31-17 lead.

“The second half was all Piner as the Dragons couldn’t sustain any offense,” said Boles. “It was a definitely a disappointing way to end a good season. It wasn’t what we scripted.

“But you need to give your opponent credit,” said Boles. “They made more plays than we did.”

Leading scoring for Sonoma Valley was Jack Boydell with 11 points and 5 rebounds, followed by Tyler Garrett’s 5 and 4 points from Reed Hewitt.

The coach thanked all the fans who supported the season, and wished his seven seniors well – Boydell, both Tyler and Trent Garrett, Justin Cox, George Stewart, Nicolas Spanger and Brendan Hogan.

“They brought commitment, dedication, and a competitive spirit to our basketball program,” said Boles. “Our entire coaching staff is truly grateful.”
