Sonoma girl cagers finish 1-2 in Carrillo Tourney

The Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragons lost three of four basketball games last week, dropping a four-point decision to Analy on Tuesday and then going 1-2 in the Carrillo Tournament over the weekend.

Kennedy Midgley was named to the all-tournament team.

Thursday, Analy beat the Lady Dragons 46-42. Sonoma came out flat in the first half. “Se weren’t getting back on defense and were giving Analy way to easy baskets,” said Coach Jann Thorpe. “We talked at halftime and focused on a few areas that really needed to be adjusted in the second half. We came out in the second half and out-scored Analy in both quarters. The intensity was great on D, and we were able to score from both inside the key and knock down some big outside shots.”

But it wasn’t quite enough to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit. Midgley had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Sophie Lucchetti had 13 points, Annie Neles had six points and nine boards, Shauna Johnston had five points, Kaliyah Hensic had three and Jovana Saldana had a pair.

Sonoma lost their first two games in the Carrillo Tournament before rebounding with a win on Saturday. Thursday, the Lady Dragons lost to Rancho Cotate, 50-34, as Saldana had eight points and Neles had five points and five rebounds.

Friday, Sonoma fell to Piner, 51-41. “We were in this game until the fourth quarter,” Thorpe said. “In the fourth quarter, we didn’t capitalize on Piner’s mistakes – and they capitalized on ours.”

Midgley had 13 points and four boards, Lucchetti had eight points, Johnston had six, Neles had five points and seven assists, Saldana had four points, Erin Gylfe had three points while Sophia Reibli had two points and seven boards.

Saturday, the Lady Dragons bounced back and beat Carrillo, 44-23. Neles had 10 points and six rebounds, Midgley had nine points and 16 rebounds, Lucchetti had eight points, Gylfe had five, Johnston and Hensic had three, Saldana Reibli and Chelsey Crespo all had two points.

The 1-3 week left the Lady Dragons with a 3-5 record. Sonoma will be at Piner on Wednesday and will host San Rafael on Saturday. Game times is 3 p.m. for the JV and 4:30 for the varsity.
