Sonoma boys top Elsie, fall to San Rafael

The Sonoma Valley High boys cagers split a pair of games beating Elsie Allen on Thursday but falling to San Rafael on Saturday.

In Thursday’s 64-43 win over Elsie, the Dragons took an 18-10 first-quarter lead and were never headed. They had a 10-point lead at the half and a 14-point lead after three quarters.

Jack Boydell led the Dragon scoring attack with 25 points while Riley Phelan had 11, Nick Spanger had six, Reed Hewitt had five, Kahlil Villias and Tyler Garrett had four, Dom Girish, Mason Phillips and Justin Cox each had two while Trent Garrett and Brendan Hogan had one apiece.

Phelan pulled down eight rebounds while Spanger had six.

Saturday, the Dragons fell behind early and couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole. They were down 23-5 after the first quarter and 40-11 at the half.

The final score was San Rafael 61, Sonoma 37.

Boydell was the only Dragon to reach double figures in scoring and he had 12. Hogan had seven and Girish had six.

Sonoma got only one offensive rebound and had only 20 for the game with nobody pulling down more than three.

The Dragons are 4-3 on the season. Sonoma has a busy schedule with three games this week including two at home. Tonight, Tuesday, the Dragons host Alhambra, 4 p.m., 5:30 and 7; while Thursday, they host Rancho Cotate, 4 p.m., 5:30 and 7. And Saturday, the Dragons will be on the road at Terra Linda. After Thursday, the Dragons won’t be home again until Monday, Jan. 7.
