Sonoma tennis girls score first win

Doubles teams sweep Vintage for win|

It took eight matches, but Wednesday, the Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon tennis team won its first match of the season, defeating Vintage 4-3.

The Lady Dragons swept the three doubles matches after losing three of four singles matches.

In singles play, Vintage’s Jamie Pope beat Olivia Weisiger, 6-1 and 6-0; Vintage’s Cooper Lohman topped Audrey Castillo, 6-0 and 6-0; Vintage’s Grace Christman defeated Lilly Raaka, 6-0 and 6-1; while Siobhan Hernandez beat Vintage’s Erin Meader, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-2.

In doubles play, Erin Gylfe and Hannah Walton beat Vintage’s Kate Ilsley and Serena Kastella, 6-1 and 6-0; Mary Gallo and Reese Dobson topped Vintage’s Morgan Wright and Rose Mooney, 6-3 and 6-2; and Eden Scheiblich and Lizza Moore completed the sweep beating Vintage’s Melissa Cortez and Casey Letourneau, 6-2 and 6-3.

“I’m so thrilled to get our first win of the season,” said Coach Mary Kate Dreyer. “It was wonderful to recognize my group of eight seniors – they are truly a great group of very talented athletes.”

The seniors included Eden Scheiblich, Audrey Castillo, Lizza Moore, Siobhan Hernandez, Erin Gylfe, Hannah Walton, Dylan Rooney and Maya Grajezyk.

Tuesday, the Lady Dragons dropped a 5-2 decision to American Canyon.

In singles, Olivia Weisiger beat American Canyon’s Lylah Awad, 6-3 and 6-2; American Canyon’s Grace Warioba topped Audrey Castillo, 6-3 and 6-1; American Canyon’s Genesis Billingsley defeated Lilly Raaka, 6-0 and 6-1; and American Canyon’s Berke Nauright topped Siobhan Hernandez, 6-2 and 6-2.

In doubles, American Canyon’s Lila Hawes and Nyla Maharaj topped Mary Gallo and Reese Dobson, 6-4 and 6-4; Erin Gylfe and Hannah Walton defeated American Canyon’s Yesi Alvarez and Ellie Angold, 6-3 and 6-4; and American Canyon’s Emily Koekemoer and Lauren Wheelhouse beat Eden Scheiblich and Lizza Moore, 4-6, 7-5 and 7-6 (10-6).

“It was nice to see Olivia live up to her potential and get a win,” Dreyer said. “Number 2 doubles continued their win streak, and number 3 doubles put up a terrific fight.”

The Lady Dragons are 1-8 on the season.

Sonoma will be back in action Tuesday, Oct. 16, when they visit Casa Grande.
