The Sonoma Stompers stormed out early Tuesday evening as they opened a quick two-game series in Napa, scoring seven runs over the first four innings to power their way to a 7-5 win over the Silverados.

But the storm had passed by Wednesday, and the Stompers endured a four-run sixth inning from the Silverados from which they couldn’t recover, falling 5-4.

Tuesday’s game was the team’s first in Napa this season, and the Stompers got things rolling with two runs in the first inning when Miles Williams connected for his fifth home run in three games only a few pitches into the game. A Napa error allowed a second run to score when Daniel Baptista singled in Kenny Meimerstorf, putting the Stompers on top to stay before the Silverados had a chance to bat.

The Stompers put three more runs on the board in the third on RBI hits from Meimerstorf and Baptista, extending the Sonoma lead to 5-1. The next inning Meimerstorf blasted a two-run homer to give the Stompers a comfortable, and ultimately unsurmountable, 7-1 lead.

Dominic Topoozian made his eighth start of the season, going 6.2 innings and striking out nine Silverado hitters while allowing just three runs.

“I felt like I was keeping their hitters off balance,” Topoozian said. “Our team though, they fight every single day. We’ve got some great players on this squad.”

Kenny Mathews relieved Topoozian with 1.1 scoreless innings, including two strikeouts, and Jacob Cox entered the game late to record a one-out save, his league-leading 10th save of the season.

Wednesday found Vijay Patel starting his first game this year, and he held Napa to one run over the first five innings. But Patel struggled after recording two outs in the sixth inning, allowing Napa to take the lead with four runs before the third out was called.

Despite scoreless seventh and eighth innings of relief from Ryan Richardson and Cole Watts, the offense could not quite come back far enough, and the Stompers’ five-game winning streak came to an end.

Sonoma kicked off a two-game series with the first-place San Rafael Pacifics on Thursday (too late for press time). Friday is Women in Sports Night at Palooza Park, and all female athletes wearing their current team’s gear get a free general admission ticket.

A two-game series against Martinez follows. Weekday and Saturday games start at 6:05 p.m., Sunday’s game begins at 1:05. To purchase Stompers tickets and to find more information about the team, visit stompersbaseball.com.
