Baseball Dragons fall in NCS play

Dragons move into new league next year|

The Sonoma Valley High baseball Dragons were one-and-done Tuesday in the North Coast Section Division 3 tournament.

The Dragons, who drew a 15th seed, lost to second-seed Campolindo, 6-1.

The Cougars plated a pair of runs in the second inning on an error to take a 2-0 lead.

Sonoma got on the board in the top of the fourth when Tyler Garrett singled home Carsten Cuda to cut the Campolindo lead in half, at 2-1. But the Cougars added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-1 game.

Jeremy Mackling started for the Dragons and went 4-2/3 innings giving up two earned runs. Brendan Hogan came in and relieved Mackling and finished the game.

“It was a good season and we definitely would like to still be playing, but this is a special group of kids,” said Coach Ian Slaney. “I’ve coached at multiple high schools and colleges and this team will be hard to leave.”

Slaney who took over the Dragons reins this year, is leaving to take a teaching position at a Marin County school.

The loss ends the Dragon season with a 10-12 overall record. Sonoma also finished its final Sonoma County League season with a 6-6 league mark. Next year, Sonoma will be in a new conference with Petaluma, Casa Grande, Justin-Siena, Napa, Vintage and American Canyon.
