Dragon tennis boys co-champs

Freshman ?Carlos Rubio ends season unbeaten|

The Sonoma Valley High tennis boys Wednesday beat Petaluma, 5-2, and earned a co-championship with the Trojans. Both teams finished the regular season 6-1.

Freshman Carlos Rubio finished the season undefeated and will probably receive the top seed in the Sonoma County League tournament which got under way on Thursday and wraps up today (Friday).

Wednesday’s match was the third in three days for the Dragons.

“It was an awesome performance by the Dragon tennis boys,” said Coach Walt Williams. “Carlos Rubio remained undefeated for the season and the Dragons fought hard all week to become champions.”

Sonoma faced Analy Monday and Tuesday, and the score both days was an identical 5-2.

Sonoma is competing in the SCL tournament at the SRJC courts in Santa Rosa. This year, each team can take three singles players and three doubles teams. The singles players include Rubio, Trevor Griggs-Demmin and Erik Serbicki while Sonoma’s doubles teams are Sam Weisiger and Andrew McKale, Reed Hewitt and Dominik Garcia, and Henry Darnell and Nace Momsen.

In Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Petaluma, in singles play, at number one, Rubio beat Petaluma’s Nathan Wong, 6-3 and 6-3; at two, Griggs-Demmin topped Petaluma’s Connor Gors, 6-4 and 7-5; at three, Serbicki topped Petaluma’s Colton Moss, 6-1 and 6-3; while at four, Petaluma’s Hayden Dennis defeated Sam Weisiger, 6-4 and 6-4.

In doubles play, at one, McKale and Momsen topped Petaluma’s Alex Dodd and Khalil Tams, 5-7, 6-4 and 6-2; at two, Petaluma’s Logan Reuter and Griffin Epstein beat Hewitt and Garcia, 6-2 and 6-2; while at three, Darnell and Hewitt defeated Aiden Cannon and Jake Simmons, 6-4 and 6-2.

Tuesday, Sonoma bear Analy 5-2.

In singles, at one, Rubio beat Analy’s Andrea Depaola, 2-6, 6-4 and 6-0; at two, Griggs-Demmin topped Analy’s Tommy Howley, 1-6, 6-2 and 6-3; at three, Analy’s Nick Kraemer defeated Weisiger, 6-1 and 6-0; and at four, McKale beat Analy’s ?Cason Roberts, 6-4 and 6-4.

In doubles, at one Hewitt and Garcia defeated Analy’s Ben Landucci and Johnathan Taggart, 6-4 and 6-2; at two, Analy’s Aidan Briggs and Quinn Adair topped Hewitt and Darnell, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-3; and at three, Momsen and Max Gustafson beat Lewis Valenzuela and Ethan Wesselkamper, 0-6, 6-0 and 10-8 (tiebreak third set).

“It was another close win for the Dragons with one and two singles both coming back after first set losses,” Williams said.

Monday, the Dragons beat Analy, 5-2.

In singles, at one, Rubio beat Analy’s Andrea Depaola 7-6 (7-2) and 6-3; at two, Griggs-Demmin topped Analy’s Tommy Howley, 6-2 and 6-2; at three, Weisiger defeated Analy’s Nick Kraemer, 6-1 and 7-5; and at four, McKale topped Analy’s Carson Roberts, 1-6, 7-5 and 7-6 (9-7).

In doubles, at one, Analy’s Johnathan Taggart and Ben Landucci beat Momsen and Reed Hewitt, 7-5 and 6-2; at two, Julian Hewitt and Garcia topped Analy’s Aidan Briggs and Louis Valenzuela 6-0, 4-6 and 10-3 (tiebreak third set) and at three, Analy’s Quinn Adair and Ethan Wesselkamper beat Darnell ansd Jackson Zyskowski, 6-1 and 6-1.

“Outstanding come-from-behind wins for Carlos (Rubio) and Andrew (McKale). I’m very proud of how the Dragon tennis boys played in this rain-tainted season,” William said.
