Little League gets under way in Sonoma

Last Friday, March 16, the Sonoma Little League opened the season with its annual Opening Night Hat Ceremony at Hughes Field.

Because of the rains, the ceremony was originally scheduled for Hughes Field, moved indoors to Altimira and then late that afternoon, was moved back to Hughes Field.

Some 350 Little Leaguers showed up for ceremonies that included team introductions and parade, a few speeches, the kids getting their caps and the traditional first pitch.

This year, the A Division, for 5-to-7-year-olds, has six teams; the AA Division for 7-to-10-year-olds, has five teams; the AAA Division for 7-to-11-year-olds has seven teams and the Majors, for 9-to-12-year-olds, has eight teams.

While there were no games scheduled that evening, they managed to get some games in on Saturday.

In a rematch of last year’s Championship game, the Falcons came out swinging putting up four runs in the first then scoring in every inning resulting in an 11-1 victory.

The Mustangs edged the Red Sox, 1-0 in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel. The Bears won a closely contested 5-2 battle with the Tigers and the Cardinals hit their way to a 12-2 win over the Blue Jays.
