Dragons win on walk-off single

Baseball Dragons will play three games this week|

Anthony Tommasi hit a walk-off single Friday with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as the Sonoma Valley High baseball Dragons beat American Canyon, 3-2.

Tommasi’s line-drive single to left knocked in Tucker Pierce who had walked, moved to third on a single by Max Handron. Jeremy Mackling was walked intentionally to fill the bases.

“I just knew Anthony was going to get a hit,” said Dragon Coach Ian Slaney. “This is more excitement than I wanted.”

The Wolves got on the board in the top of the first on a single and a double. Sonoma threatened in its half of the first with two walks, but a double-play all but killed the threat.

In the second, the Dragons again threatened when Austin Arrington walked, took second when Kole Morgan singled, stole third, but was out trying to steal home on a double-steal.

After giving up a run in the first, Sonoma pitcher Patrick Schneider settled down and put the Wolves down in order in the third and fourth innings.

Sonoma tied the game in its half of the fifth when Logan Mak walked, advanced to second on an error by the American Canyon second baseman, stole third and was balked home.

Slaney made some changes in the top of the sixth, moving Mackling from center field to pitching, installing Tyler Garrett at first and Morgan to catcher.

“I wanted to give Jeremy some work,” Slaney said. “We haven’t had a game all week and I wanted Jeremy to get some work before we open up league play Tuesday at Healdsburg.”

The Dragons took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Handron, who was leading off, hit a long triple to right-center field, and came home when Tommasi grounded to the shortstop who couldn’t nail Handron at the plate.

American Canyon tied the game in the top of the seventh, when, with two outs, Mackling walked a batter and gave up singles to the next two batters.

The win evens the Dragon non-conference record at 4-4.

Despite getting Friday night’s game in, the Dragons had to postpone Saturday night’s game against Maria Carrillo. It will be replayed on Saturday night. The Dragons open SCL play tonight, Tuesday, at Healdsburg. They host Petaluma at 7 p.m. Friday, and then host Maria Carrillo Saturday.
