Rain wreaks havoc on spring sports

Swimmers only ones who are spared|

The badly needed rain this week has been a boon for the ski resorts as the snow is being measured in feet, and the state’s reservoirs are starting to fill back up.

But the rain is playing havoc with Sonoma Valley High spring sports.

Tuesday baseball against American Canyon, canceled. Wednesday softball against Rancho, canceled. Wednesday track’s Green/White/Black meet, postponed.

Boys tennis had Tuesday’s match against Healdsburg washed out and Thursday’s match against Petaluma also washed out. Likewise with boys golf. Tuesday’s match with Petaluma and Thursday’s match with Analy, both washed out.

The Dragon swim team was scheduled for a meet against Piner on Thursday, and barring a thunderstorm, they’ll be swimming.

Last year, the Dragon swimmers won both the girls and boys Sonoma County League titles and this year, Coach Jane Hansen has another strong squad with 35 girls and 19 boys.

Hansen said the Dragons will be returning some of their strongest swimmers from last year – and have some new faces too.

On the girls’ team, seniors Hannah Ladouceur and Abby Parr return, as well as junior Maya Grajczyk and sophomores Charlotte Hunter, Sofia Portello and Kathryn Ajax. The boys return senior Dominick Tommasi, junior Ethan Smith and sophomore Jason Pine. Some of the talented newcomers include sophomore Dominic Fiorito and freshman Hanna Wales.

In the Dragons last lap through the Sonoma County League, Hansen thinks Petaluma, who added some talented freshmen, will be a threat. “And Analy always provides good competition,” she said.

The swimmers were scheduled to swim against Petaluma on Thursday. The Dragons host El Molino next Thursday at the Sonoma Aquatic Club. In addition, the Dragons have three other home meets, March 29 against Healdsburg; April 12 against Analy and April 19 against Petaluma.

The SCL championships are set for April 27 and 28 at SRJC.

The tennis Dragons, coached again by Walt Williams, had both matches this week washed out.

Williams said he’s got a freshman, Carlos Rubio, playing in the number one slot, and junior Trevor Griggs-Demmin will open in the number two slot.

Williams had to cut some players this year, going from an original 32 down to 25.

The boys don’t play a non-conference schedule, they just go right into the SCL schedule, although Piner and Elsie Allen aren’t fielding teams this year. In addition to Thursday’s rain-out, the boys have three other home matches, March 27 against Analy; April 5 against Healdsburg and April 19 against El Molino.

Softball Coach Keeley Ray has eight returners from last year’s 19-5 team. Returning are seniors Alissa Orr, Jaya Garcia, Raquel Hernandez and Lyndsey Lee; and sophomores Kennedy Midgley, Ally Alcayaga, Abby Alcayaga and Kaliyah Hensic.

The Lady Dragons did get a non-conference game in Monday, losing to Windsor, 8-4.

Ally Alcayaga went three-for-four with a home run and two RBIs, Annie Neles was three-for-three and Kennedy Midgley was two-for-four with an RBI.

The softballers home non-conference game against Montgomery today, Friday, March 16, was canceled Thursday. Next week, the Lady Dragons have three home games slated, Tuesday against Analy; Thursday against Petaluma and a non-conference game Friday against Marin Catholic. Sonoma has five other home games scheduled, April 10 against Pinole; April 17 against El Molino; April 26 against Piner; May 1 against Healdsburg and May 8 against Elsie Allen.

Dragon track Coach Linda Patterson again has a huge team with 71 athletes. Wednesday’s Green/White/Black meet was rained out, but will be rescheduled to next Wednesday, March 21. Saturday, Patterson will be taking 18 athletes to the Jumpers/Throwers Jamboree in Santa Rosa.

The Dragons have three home meets scheduled, April 11 against Petaluma and Healdsburg; April 25 against El Molino and Analy; and May 2 against El Molino.

This year, the boys’ golf team has a new coach as Nickolai Mathison takes the reins. Mathison inherits a team that includes six returners – four juniors and two sophomores - from last year.

The Dragons were supposed to start play this week, but both matches – against Petaluma and Analy – were victims of the weather.

The Dragons have four more home matches scheduled, March 29 against Petaluma; April 12 against El Molino; April 17 against Piner and April 19 against Healdsburg.

And the baseball Dragons, who got an early start on the season and have already played seven games, had Tuesday night’s game against American Canyon washed out.

The Dragons are slated to host Maria Carrillo at 7 p.m. Saturday at Arnold Field, weather permitting.
