The Sonoma Thunder, the brand new Sonoma Valley girls high school lacrosse team, played their first two games March 3, at the Petaluma Sports Complex on East Washington Street.

Opening their season against a far more experienced Napa Force team was a challenging start for the Thunder, and the game resulted in an 8-2 loss for Sonoma. First-year player junior Hannah Walton stepped in as goalkeeper making eight saves. Sophomore Mary Gallo netted two goals. Coach Lou Biaggi was undeterred by the defeat.

“This is part of the process, we have a team that is comprised majority of athletes who have played for a year or less. These athletes have a lot of drive and commitment and are learning the game at a much faster pace than anticipated,” Biaggi said. “We’ll take our lumps but we’ll certainly surprise a few folks. I can’t wait to see where this team is in May.”

In the second game against a physical Pleasant Grove team, the Sonoma girls came away with an unexpected 7-5 victory. With sophomore Lisette Aguilar in the cage making six saves, the Sonoma team played a tough defensive game with an array of goal scorers rounding out the offensive effort. Gallo and Skye Whitlock of Sebastopol each scored twice while senior Jasmine Williams, sophomore Reese Dobson and Lauren Allison of Santa Rosa each had a goal.

The Sonoma X-Strike youth players from the girls 8U and 10U teams were on hand to cheer on the high school. The Sonoma team travels to Stockton on Saturday, March 10, for games against the Central Valley Spartans and Woodcreek High School.
