Campolindo tops Sonoma girl hoopsters in NCS

Lady Dragons season finale|

The Lady Dragon cagers also bowed out of the NCS playoffs Tuesday, as they ran into a tough Campolindo team, and lost 72-37.

“Despite what the score shows, it was actually a really fun game,” said Lady Dragon Coach Jann Thorpe. “The girls once again played so hard and I want to say even had Campolindo a little nervous in the first quarter.”

The Lady Dragon defense was wearing the Cougars down.

“Any time we got a steal, we tried to push the ball up and take advantage of their big post player trailing,” she said.

Campolindo’s post is a 6-foot senior who averages 30 points a game.

“We saw film on her so we knew what we were in for. We had her double- and triple-teamed at times and early were able to frustrate her a little but she quickly figured out how to position herself and just shot right over us,” Thorpe said. “She’s good! And she played the entire game.”

Despite being down 18-8 after the first quarter and 34-16 at the half, Thorpe said the girls didn’t play scared and didn’t quit.

“We had so much spirit and really just had fun playing together one last time,” she added.

The Cougars increased their lead to 54-28 after three quarters.

Alyssa Schimm led Sonoma with 13 points, Annie Neles had nine, Kennedy Midgley had six, Sydney VonGober had four, Sophie Lucchetti had three and Erin Gylfe had a pair.

“The saddest part of the game was when it was over and knew this was the last game with our amazing seniors, Alyssa (Schimm) and Sydney (VonGober). What those two girls have given to this program with their leadership and commitment, I will always be so grateful for,” Thorpe said. “I’m honored to have been their coach these last six years as we started way back in seventh grade at Adele (Harrison Middle School).”
