Nine Sonoma Valley High Dragon wrestlers qualified for next Saturday’s North Coast Section meet at James Logan High in Hayward.

Dragons who qualified at Saturday’s Sonoma County League meet include Ean Schiffman (at 128 pounds), Macklyn Liss (134), Grayson Geldert (140), Lawson Lee (147), Daniel Gallo (154), Hank Schoeningh (162), Mario Coronado (172), Dean Dunham (197) and Tyler Winslow (222).

Winslow came away with the Dragons championship win as Sonoma finished second to Petaluma for the second straight year.

Schiffman, Liss, Schoeningh, Coronado and Dunham, all took seconds; Geldert and Gallo took thirds and Lee took a fourth.

“Ean (Schiffman) wrestled his best for the post-season. He came in as the third seed, and avenged an earlier loss in the semi-finals to make the finals,” said Dragon Coach Nico Saldana. “This was the second time in two years Ean made the finals.”

Liss lost to a familiar opponent from Petaluma, the fifth-ranked (NCS) Connor Pederson. Geldert qualified for NCS as a freshman, and Saldana said he wrestled very well throughout the tournament.

Lawson was another freshman wrestling in one of the tougher brackets in the tournament. In his first year in wrestling in the tournament, Gallo placed third and will make his first trip to NCS.

Schoeningh shook off an injury that kept him out of the lineup and placed second. Coronado, a senior, earned his first trip to NCS.”Mario has improved a lot over the course of his career making his first SCL finals,” Saldana said.

Dunham qualified by placing second. “It was a tough finals match, that he lost in the overtime,” the coach said.

“Tyler (Winslow) went 2-0, pinning both opponents in the first period. Tyler will be the #1 seed at NCS next weekend.”
