The Sonoma Valley High wrestlers lost both of their meets in the NCS Duals held Saturday at El Molino.

The Dragons were the seventh seed in the eight-team tournament. In the first round, Sonoma lost to Ukiah, the #2 seed, 55-18. Picking up wins for Sonoma were Grayson Geldert at 138 pounds; Chris Duran at 160 who won by forfeit; and Tyler Winslow at 220 who also won by a forfeit.

In the second round, the Dragons faced Del Norte, who was the #4 seed, and lost 45-31. The Dragons got wins from James Bounds at 114; Macklyn Liss at 132; Lawson Lee on a pin at 145; Mario Coronado on a pin at 172; Dean Dunham who won by a pin at 195, and Winslow who won on a forfeit at 220.

“The dual meet results went according to seed, so as expected,” said Dragon Coach Nico Saldana. “In dual-meet tournaments, it’s tough to start in the hole, by giving up two forfeits and down 12 points. The box score doesn’t show how competitive the matches were.”

Saldana said the wrestlers hung tough and competed despite facing two dominant programs.

“I truly believe that if our 184 pounder and heavyweight been healthy, that dual meet would have been ours,” he continued. “However, those are the breaks, all we can do now is look forward.”

“It was unfortunate that both teams forfeited to Tyler (Winslow), as they both had wrestlers, but chose not to wrestle him. He gets up early and laces his shoes to wrestle,” Saldana added.

The grapplers will be competing in the Sonoma County League Tournament Saturday at Healdsburg.
