Sonoma Valley soccer boys and girls teams both in NCS playoffs

Soccer boys get #9 seed while girls are 13th, as local Dragon teams enter playoffs beginning Feb. 14.|

Both the Sonoma Valley High boys and girls soccer teams qualified for the Division 3 North Coast Section playoffs that start this week. And both of them face Sir Francis Drake High.

The boys team that won the Sonoma County League title received a ninth seed and will face eighth-seeded Drake at Red Hill Field in San Anselmo at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The winner of the Drake-Sonoma Valley match would face top-seeded Miramonte on Saturday, Feb. 17.

The Dragons have won their last four matches leading up to the playoffs. The beat Elsie Allen, 2-1; shut out Petaluma, 3-0; beat Analy 2-1 and then on Saturday, beat Piner, 1-0 for the SCL title as Bryan Rodriguez scored Sonoma's lone – and game-winning – goal.

'No game was easy,' said Dragon Coach Pedro Merino. 'All of them were intense.'

Both Analy and Piner also made the 15-team field with Piner getting a fifth seed and Analy getting a 12th seed. Other teams in the field include Bishop O'Dowd (2), Acalanes (3), Rancho Cotate (4), San Lorenzo (6), Terra Linda (7), Pinole Valley (10), DeAnza (11), Kennedy (13), Albany (14), and San Rafael (15).

The girls, despite losing their last game Friday night, 3-1, to Analy, also received an NCS bid.

The Lady Dragons too will be facing Drake at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sir Francis Drake High.

Sonoma received a 13th seed while Drake is the fourth seed. The winner of Wednesday's game faces the winner of the Terra Linda (5)-Ygnacio Valley (12) game.

Analy received the top seed. Other teams in the bracket include Campolindo (2), Kennedy (3), Petaluma (6), Miramonte (7), El Cerrito (8), Pinole Valley (9), Alhambra (10), DeAnza (11), Albany (14) and Encinal (16).
