The Sonoma Valley High wrestlers used eight forfeits to beat a depleted Piner squad Wednesday, 60-18.

Only four matches were contested. Nick Biaggi, at 170, won by a pin in the third round over Joey Ruiz, while Gianni Palacio, heavyweight, used a first-period pin to beat Clayton Carter.

“It was good to have Nick Biaggi and Gianni Palacio back in the line-up,” said Coach Nico Saldana. “Nick’s a senior and has been struggling with injuries since last year. He stepped in and showed he’s still game.”

“Gianni was eligible to compete in his first competition and took advantage of his opportunity,” Saldana continued. “He secured the first takedown, then turned his opponent for the fall in the first period.

The Dragons lost at 120 as James Bounds lost by a second-period pin to Ryan Ball, and at 126 when Ean Schiffman lost by a second-period pin to Dylan Mey.

Sonoma’s forfeit wins were awarded to Wyatt Pagh (109), Greyson Geldert (138), Lawson Lee (145), Chris Duran (152), Hank Schoeningh (160), Mario Coronado (182) and Tyler Winslow (195). Sonoma forfeited the 220 pound and there was a doubled forfeit at 113.

Most of the Dragon underclassmen will be competing in the Prince of the Mat Junior Varsity Tournament today, Friday, in Windsor. Five wrestlers will be competing in the King of the Mat Tournament Saturday, also at Windsor.

“Windsor’s King of the Mat is the toughest tournament in the North Bay,” Saldana said.
