The Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon cagers had a bad quarter Wednesday and it cost them a win against Petaluma.

The Lady Dragons trailed by three points at the half, but couldn’t buy a basket in the third quarter as they were outscored 14-1.

Sonoma staged a fourth-quarter comeback but it was too little, too late and Petaluma ended with a 40-30 win.

The game was close in the early going as the Lady Dragons knotted the game at 6-6 at the 3:37 mark of the first quarter, but the Trojans went on a 6-1 run and led 12-7 at the end of the quarter.

The Dragons again tied the game early in the second quarter as Annie Neles hit a basket and a free throw and Annika Ginter hit a basket. Midway through the quarter, the Trojans went on an 8-0 run, but the Dragons closed the margin to 22-19 in the last minute when Alyssa Schimm hit a basket and a pair of free throws.

But the third quarter sealed the Dragons’ doom as they managed a single free throw – and that at the 1:28 mark.

The Lady Dragons outscored Petaluma 10-4 in the fourth quarter, but the closest they got was when Schimm hit a basket at the 1:58 mark to cut the deficit to eight.

Schimm led the Dragons with 14 points, Neles had 11, Sofia Vitale had three and Ginter had two.

Monday, Sonoma beat Maria Carrillo, 47-39.

Schimm led the Dragons with 13 points and seven boards, Sydney VonGober had 10 points, Neles had seven points to go with her six boards, Ginter had five points and 10 rebounds, Vitale had four and Kasia Jacobson had a pair.

“I was much happier with this win as we were much more patient on offense and took good care of the ball,” said Coach Jann Thorpe. “We limited our turnovers and took good shots. We’ll continue to work on the shooting and free throws as that hasn’t been one of our strengths of lately. The defense once again kept us in this game.

Friday, Sonoma beat El Molino, 44-31.

Schimm had 11 points and eight rebounds, Ginter had nine points, Neles and Vitale each had six, Kennedy Midgley had three, Erin Gylft had two while Jacobson and Sophie Lucchetti had one point apiece.

The Lady Dragons have an 8-8 overall mark and a 4-2 SCL record.

Saturday, the Lady Dragons host Pinole Valley in a non-conference matchup. Sonoma returns to conference play on Tuesday when they host Piner.
