Dragon cagers tame Lions

Jack Boydell and Dylan Samaniego both scored in double figures Tuesday as the Sonoma Valley High Dragon cagers beat the El Molino Lions, 58-54.

The Dragons ran off to an early 16-10 first-quarter lead and extended the margin to 26-12 late in the second quarter. But the Lions went on a 15-4 run in the closing minutes of the half to pull to within 30-27 at the half.

The Dragons couldn’t put the Lions away as El Molino kept the game close and even tied it at 54 with 1:46 left in the game. But Samaniego hit a basket and later sunk a pair of free throws to give the Dragons their four-point win.

“It was a nice team win,” said Coach Mike Boles. “We got positive contributions from Trent Garrett, Justin Cox, Nicolas Spanger, and Dylan Samaniego off the bench. It’s so critical to have players contribute when called upon. We’re proud of those young men.”

Boydell led the Dragon attack with 20 points as he was eight of 10 from the field and pulled down four rebounds. Samaniego had 11 points and three assists, Garrett had eight points and six rebounds, Riley Phelan also had eight points and Spanger had five points,

“We did a good job of responding, especially late in fourth quarter,” Boles said. “El Molino stayed close despite some good play by the Dragons. It was crazy.”

“But we made plays when it mattered,” he added.

The win gives the Dragons a 7-11 overall mark and a 2-3 Sonoma County League record. The Dragons hosted Piner Thursday, results not available at press time. Sonoma travels to Rancho Cotate for a Saturday night game before returning home Tuesday to host Healdsburg.
