Bill Lynch’s fishing column: Dec. 22

BILL LYNCH, BY BILL LYNCH

If you’re still looking for a last minute gift or two for your favorite angler, here are a few suggestions:

A 2018 California fishing license ($48.34). You can find them in Sonoma Valley at Brocco’s Old Barn, 19660 Arnold Drive, or on line at wildlife.ca.gov.

For the trout fisher in your life, an annual membership in Trout Unlimited, Redwood Empire Chapter is a good way to support an environmental cause and your favorite angler. There is a special introductory offer for new members of $17.50 for an annual membership at gifts.tu.org/member/intro.

The local chapter of TU has this year installed waddles that protect waterways from heavy metals and other contaminants due to wildfires, removed tons of trash from local streams and supported environmental education in local schools.

A day’s fishing for striped bass or sturgeon on San Francisco Bay is a great holiday present. Keith Fraser at Loch Lomond Bait Shop in San Rafael 415-456-0321, can arrange a gift certificate for a spot on Captain Trent Slate’s party boat, “Bite Me” for bay fishing. He also offers gift certificates for tackle and bait.

A day’s fishing off the Sonoma Coast on Capt. Rick Powers’ party boat, “New Sea Angler” is $130. Call him at 875-3344.

If you have a child or grandchild who is a real fishing nut, I suggest a gift certificate for “Camp Fly Fish,” a five-day, fishing day camp near Ashland, Oregon offered by my friends Rachel and Jim Andras of Andras Outfitting.

The camp, which takes place in June after school is out, costs $375.

All details can be found at andrasoutfitters.com.

Rachel can also arrange for family accommodations in Ashland, so that the parents or grandparents can enjoy the Shakespeare Festival, shopping and fine restaurants it offers.

In addition to the kids’ camp, your favorite adult angler would love a day’s guided trip with Jim Andras, fishing for steelhead on the Rogue River.

A full day on the river for two anglers is $450.

Rachel also offers fly-casting lessons for $75 per person for a 1-1/2-hour lesson.

Check out the andrasoutfitters.com website or call Rachel at 530-227-4837.

Readers’ Books on East Napa Street just got a new supply of my book, “My Sonoma – Valley of the Moon,” after having sold out last week. There are a few copies also at Chateau Sonoma and the Fat Pilgrim.

Merry Christmas to all and to all good fishing.
