Winslow takes 195 title at San Marin

Sonoma Valley High wrestler Tyler Winslow was the tournament champion at 195 pounds Saturday as the Dragon grapplers competed in the San Marin Green and Gold Tournament.

“Tyler showed why he’s a top wrestler in the NCS (North Coast Section),” said Coach Nico Saldana.

In his first two matches, Winslow pinned one and recorded a tech win and was winning on points in the final before his opponent was injured and was forced to pull out.

“Tyler’s finals opponent was a returning place winner from the Sac-Joaquin Section,” Saldana said. “It was too bad he was injured because it would have been fun to see the entire match play out.”

Also at 195, Dean Dunham finished seventh with a 1-1 mark, losing to the eventual third-place finisher. Mario Coronado was seventh at 170 pounds. “Mario wrestled really well, improving each time he stepped on the mat,” Saldana said. “His only loss was to the eventual runner-up, which he lost to in his first match of the day.”

Macklyn Liss placed fifth at 138, going 3-2. “Macklyn’s two losses came at the hands of the eventual champion and third-place finisher. Macklyn’s mat skills are becoming his strongest asset.” Saldana said.

Other wrestlers who competed include Ean Schiffman (0-2) at 126, Zander Casillas (1-2) at 138, and Hank Schoeningh (1-2) at 160. “Unfortunately for Hank, he was injured in his second match, but insisted on giving it a go in his third match. Clearly, the injury hampered his performance and he lost his final match,” Saldana added.

Freshman Lawson Lee saw his first varsity action at 145. “Lawson handily won the JV tournament the previous weekend, so we decided to test him against the big boys,” Saldana said. “Though he didn’t place, he did go 2-2, and proved he belonged in the varsity ranks.

Saldana was pleased with how his grapplers performed in their first teams of the season.

“Overall, everyone wrestled well,” he said. “There’s room for growth, but you could tell each kid was working on improving their skills, which is exactly what we want them to do.”

The JVs will compete in the Healdsburg Tournament on Friday.

The grapplers won’t be back in action until after Christmas break when they open the Sonoma County League season at Petaluma on Jan. 10.
